Aircraft Certification, Airworthiness & Documentation

Every aircraft flying today is supported by thousands of pages of technical and legal documentation. These documents are not simply paperwork. They are the evidence that an aircraft was properly designed, built, maintained, and operated safely.

Step 1 – Certification: Proving the Aircraft is Safe

Before an aircraft can enter service, aviation authorities such as the FAA or EASA must approve its design.

The process begins with the Type Certificate (TC), which confirms that the aircraft design meets all required safety standards.

Once the design is approved, the manufacturer receives a Production Certificate (PC), allowing the aircraft to be built according to the approved design.

Finally, each individual aircraft receives an Airworthiness Certificate (AC) confirming that it matches the approved design and is safe to fly.

Think of certification as obtaining a driver's license for an aircraft design before it is allowed to carry passengers.


Step 2 – Airworthiness: Keeping the Aircraft Safe

Certification happens once. Airworthiness is a continuous process.

An aircraft is considered airworthy when:

  • It conforms to its approved design.

  • It is in a condition for safe operation.

Maintaining airworthiness requires inspections, maintenance, repairs, modifications, and detailed record keeping throughout the aircraft's life.

An aircraft that is not properly maintained may lose its airworthy status even though it was correctly certified when it was built.


Step 3 – Technical Manuals: The Aircraft's Instruction Books

Manufacturers publish technical manuals that explain how to inspect, maintain, repair, and operate the aircraft.

Some of the most important manuals include:

AMM – Aircraft Maintenance Manual

The primary maintenance handbook. It explains how maintenance tasks must be performed.

IPC – Illustrated Parts Catalog

A detailed parts catalogue showing component locations and part numbers.

FIM – Fault Isolation Manual

A troubleshooting guide used to identify the source of technical problems.

SRM – Structural Repair Manual

Provides approved methods for repairing aircraft structures.

MPD – Maintenance Planning Document

Lists the maintenance tasks and inspection intervals required during the aircraft's life.

These manuals are the official reference documents used by technicians and engineers.


Step 4 – Regulatory Documents

Aviation authorities continuously monitor aircraft safety after certification.

Important regulatory documents include:

Airworthiness Directives (AD)

Mandatory instructions issued by aviation authorities to correct safety problems.

Advisory Circulars (AC)

Guidance documents explaining acceptable methods of compliance.

Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS)

The official description of an approved aircraft design.

Unlike manufacturer recommendations, regulatory requirements are legally enforceable.


Step 5 – Operational Documents

Aircraft operators create additional documents needed for daily operations.

Examples include:

MEL – Minimum Equipment List

Defines which equipment may be temporarily inoperative while still allowing safe flight.

Operations Manual

Describes company procedures for flight operations and maintenance.

Weight and Balance Documentation

Ensures the aircraft is loaded safely and remains within approved limits.

These documents help translate manufacturer instructions into practical airline operations.


Step 6 – Aircraft Records: The Permanent History

Every inspection, repair, modification, and component replacement must be recorded.

Aircraft records create a permanent history of the aircraft and provide evidence that all maintenance has been completed correctly.

Typical records include:

  • Maintenance logs

  • Inspection reports

  • Component histories

  • Modification records

  • Release certificates

  • Airworthiness compliance records

Without accurate records, an aircraft cannot prove that it remains airworthy.
